Construction of New Transcontinental Printing Plant in San Francisco Right On Track

Work on Transcontinental’s future plant to print the San Francisco Chronicle in Fremont, California has been ongoing since April 2008. The new plant, called Transcontinental Northern California, measures 338,000 square feet and is scheduled to be completed by spring 2009.

Topping Out. On August 6th, the contractor in charge of the work organized the Topping Out ceremony to mark the placement of the last steel beam in the structure. All the workers who helped build the frame, as well as dignitaries from the city of Fremont and Transcontinental employees were invited to sign their names in felt pen on the final beam. Nearly 200 people attended the event. Here, Gary Hugues, project manager, signs his name.

Construction started with the traditional groundbreaking ceremony on April 16, 2008, attended by a number of company executives and guests. For Transcontinental, the ceremony marked the beginning of the process that will lead to the realization of its 15-year contract worth one billion U.S. dollars with Hearst Corporation, owner of the San Francisco Chronicle.
